Dave Bazan – Curse Your Branches
The Black Angels – Passover
Cluster/Brian Eno – Cluster/Brian Eno Originally recorded and released in 1977, this pionering ambient album brought together several legends of progressive electronic music: Brian Eno, solo artist and collaborator with David Bowie, Robert Fripp, and Roxy Music; Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius aka Cluster, both of whom made dozens of ground-breaking recordings throughout the ’70s; and Conny Plank, who recorded everyone from Neu! to Ash Ra Tempel to Devo. This album was the first of several celebrated collaborations between these artists, whose influence looms over such current bands as Aphex Twin, Boards Of Canada, and Mouse On Mars
Grand Archives – Keep In Mind Frankenstein (+ MP3 card)
Simon Joyner – Out Into The Snow (180g + MP3 card)
Sondre LercheHeartbeat Radio
Manic Street PreachersJournal For Plague Lovers (180g + MP3 card for 10 bonus remixes) Manic Street Preachers return with their ninth studio album, ‘Journal For Plague Lovers’. The album follows the hugely successful and critically acclaimed 2007 release ‘Send Away The Tigers’, and the induction of the band into the NME’s Hall Of Fame with their naming as the “NME Godlike Genius” for 2008. Produced by Steve Albini and recorded live at Rockfield Studios in Wales during the Winter of 2008, the album features lyrics left behind by former guitarist Richey Edwards across all 13 new tracks. An original piece of Jenny Saville’s art is the cover of ‘Journal for Plague Lovers’, whose painting graced the cover of 1994’s ‘The Holy Bible’ . Musically the band draw on their classic ‘Holy Bible’ sound with elements of Nirvana’s ‘In Utero’, as well as a delicate, beautiful acoustic side
Night Horse/Sea Of Air – Come Down Halo/Holy Roller 7″ split
Pens – Hey Friend! What You Doing (+ MP3 card)
Q-Tip – Kamaal The Abstract
The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir…And The Horse You Rode In On (Ltd. Ed. LP + MP3 card)

Gordon Gano & The Ryans – Under The Sun (includes MP3 card for bonus tracks) Gordon Gano, co-founder of and songwriter for alt-rock monoliths The Violent Femmes returns to the scene he helped spawn with ‘Under the Sun’. Film-scoring brothers and Bogmen members Brendan and Billy Ryan join Gano for Gordon Gano & The Ryans’ first collaboration and Gordon’s first non-Femmes release as a front man. Gano’s influence on alternative music is immeasurable and his latest work is sure to remind the music world of the force and presence with which he originally stormed onto the scene in 1983, paving the way for the commercial explosion of alternative music a decade later
Grand Archives – Keep In Mind Frankenstein
Simon Joyner – Out Into The Snow Out Into The Snow is full of gorgeous human gestures from well-developed characters rising and falling in overlapping arcs of time. Brazen songwriting, like all great art, challenges even more than it entertains. Another mile-stone performance from Simon Joyner, perhaps the greatest songwriter you’ve never heard.Sounding sometimes like Doug Yule era Velvet Underground (with some Paris 1919 John Cale thrown in for good measure), On the Beach period Neil Young , Happy/Sad era Tim Buckley, and Our Mother the Mountain period Townes Van Zandt, the album is littered with complex characters
Kid Kudi – Man On The Moon: The End Of Day (includes bonus poster)
Mark Knopfler – Get Lucky
Manic Street Preachers – Journal For Plague Lovers (+ MP3 card for 10 bonus remixes)
John Mayall – Tough
Megadeth – Endgame

Nicolay – City Lights Vol. 2: Shibuya
Porcupine Tree – The Incident (2 CD)
Q-Tip – Kamaal The Abstract His long delayed album Kamaal the Abstract, slated originally for release in 2001, is finally dropping September 15th. A music hyrid, Kamaal was commendably avant garde at the time of its creation. Amazingly, it’s even more apropos in 2009. Q-Tip produced the entire album himself, even playing several instruments. What comes from Kamaal is a daring melange of soul, supa-cool jazz, headnodding hip hop, and organic pop magic in the vein of Stevie Wonder or Prince. The album has been remixed and remastered for sonic impact
Royal Bangs – Let It Beep
The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir – …And The Horse You Rode In On
Shudder To Think – Live From Home
Simian Mobile Disco -Temporary Pleasure
Stars Of Track And Field – A Time For Lions

IT’S NEW RELEASE DAY!!!!

VINYL RELEASES:

The Avett Brothers  -Silent Figure Of Speech/More Of You 7″ (Vinyl Saturday exclusive)

Bei Bei & Shawn Lee – Beauty And The Beast 10″ EP New music by Gu Zheng performer Bei Bei and Ubiquity producer Shawn Lee marries a unique blend of ancient tradition with studio trickery and spiritual jazz. This uplifting, genre-bending, soundclash recalls the afrocentric harping of Dorothy Ashby, the hypnotic style of Alice Coltrane, and the organic electronics of Fourtet and Quantic

Big Star – Feel (alternative mix)/Mod Lang(exclusive remix) 7″ (Vinyl Saturday exclusive)

The Black Crowes – Southern Harmony And Musical Companion (re-issue)

Health – Get Color

Lord Newborn & The Magic Skulls – Lord Newborn & The Magic Skulls Lord Newborn and the Magic Skulls is the collaborative project of esteemed sound scientists Money Mark, Shawn Lee, and Tommy Guerrero. In the winter of 2008 they locked themselves away in Money Mark’s Los Angeles-based studio for two weeks. A tasty three-way meeting of the minds resulted in this funk-inflicted collection of beats n’ breaks, wrapped-up in a sunny West Coast musical tortilla that’s smothered in as much jazz and prog-rock as it is in soulful psychedelia

Mars Volta – Octahedron (Vinyl Saturday release)

Polvo – In Prism

Octopus Project – Identification Parade

Octopus Project – One Ten Hundred Thousand Million

The Stone Roses – The Stone Roses: 20th Anniversary Edition

Taken By Trees – East Of Eden Taken by Trees is the solo project of Victoria Bergsman, a former singer for the Concretes whose most indelible mark on the pop landscape came as a guest vocalist on Peter Bjorn & John’s 2006 smash-hit “Young Folks.” Working with guitarist/producer Andreas Soderstrom, Bergsman’s recordings as TbT reveal a more somber, though equally bewitching, cast, emphasizing stripped-down arrangements dominated by finger-picked acoustic guitar and simple hand percussion

Vivian Girls – Everything Goes Wrong

Wild Beasts – Two Dancers

Yo La Tengo – Popular Songs

CD RELEASES:

The Beatles – catalog re-issues (Remasters include expanded booklets in limited edition deluxe packaging, new liner notes, previously unseen photos and mini-documentary on the making of each album) 09/09/09 Release Date

Anthology Of Hymns Come O Spirit brings together artists like Dave Bazan, Damien Jurado, Rosie Thomas, Dennison Witmer, The Welcome Wagon (featuring Sufjan Stevens) and Leigh Nash to revive 400 years of long-forgotten melodies and liturgical music. The brainchild of producers Isaac Wardell and Mason Neely, Come O Spirit interprets hymnody through lush, cinematic arrangements and a drop of Southern gothic mystique

Circulatory System – Signal Morning

Damon & Naomi – Sub Pop Years

The Feelies – Crazy Rhythms

The Feelies – The Good Earth

Mayer Hawthorn – Strange Arrangement (deluxe addition including 4″ vinyl also available)

Metalocalypse: Dethklok – Dethalbum II

Monotonix – Where Were You When It Happened

Os Mutantes – Haih… Or Amortecedor… What fan would have dared dream that an impromptu, one-off reunion at London’s Barbican Theater in 2006 would lead to the first new music from Os Mutantes in over 30 years? Yet here is Haih, conceived by Mutantes founder Sergio Dias with writing collaborations from Brazilian legends Tom Ze and Jorge Ben (who wrote the band’s original hit “Minha Menina”)

Phish – Joy

Polvo – In Prism

This Sat., Sept. 5th!! – Record Store Day presents Vinyl Saturdays

September 4, 2009 · Leave a Comment

It’s time for another monthly installment of Vinyl Saturdays – brought to you by the lovely people behind Record Store Day.  One Saturday of each month, music retailers like ourselves are pleased to offer you indie-exclusive releases and/or the option to pick up titles before they are available to the masses…   This month, we are pleased to have the following titles available for your consumption:

  • AVETT BROS. we’ve got an indie-only 7” of a track from the upcoming Rick Rubin-produced album I AND LOVE AND YOU (look for that on 9/29; with vinyl even earlier: 9/15!!). The A-side of this Vinyl Saturday 7” is “Slight Figure of Speech” which is on the album, but the B-side, “More of You” is NOT, and is available on this cool 7”

BIG STAR a special 7” just for indie record stores. Why is this so special? Well…
“Feel” (alternate mix) is a selection from the forthcoming Keep An Eye On The Sky box set (coming 9/15).  Best known as the opening track of Big Star’s #1 Record, this previously unissued early mix of the song has additional guitar and some different lyrics not heard in the final mix you’ve known for all these years. It also lacks the brass overdubs and some other production touches, but is a far more rough and ready presentation of this Chris Bell classic.

After the release of Big Star’s Radio City album in 1974, a well known British producer (who shall remain nameless) from the 1960’s approached Ardent about remixing “Mod Lang”  for single release. The original tapes were flown to New York City’s famed Record Plant and augmented with piano and additional percussion (did I hear you say “more cowbell”?). Although the band passed on the results, we thought you might like to hear this “B Side”  rarity which has been sitting in the can since 1974! This track is exclusive to this vinyl release.

  • MARS VOLTA Octahedron   That’s right, the full length vinyl version of the new record, with pretty bells-and-whistles packaging designed by the band. In indie stores September 5 for VINYL SATURDAY

RX BANDITS Mandala  This band LOVES indie stores just as much as you do. That’s why, short of getting it off an actual band member, you’ll only be able to get the full length vinyl version of their new record at an indie record store. Starting on VINYL SATURDAY, September 5

New releases for August 25th

August 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment

VINYL RELEASES:

16 HorsepowerSecret South (180g + DVD-Audio re-issue)
Artic MonkeysHumbug (180g + MP3)
Humbug, the third album from Sheffield’s Arctic Monkeys, finds the band brimming with vim, vigor and new ideas. They brought in a new production accomplice, Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), for some of the recording. He generously hosted and produced tracks with them at his Joshua Tree studio. Then they rejoined forces with James Ford (Simian Mobile Disco), producer of the previous two Arctic Monkeys and Last Shadow Puppets albums, in Brooklyn, NY to complete the tracks that became Humbug. The album is a stunning set of songs both heavier and more lush than previous albums, but still full of the Monkeys usual punch and vitality
24-Carat BlackGone: The Promises Of Yesterday (Numero 025)
Cat PowerWhat Would The Community Think (re-issue)
John FogertyThe Blue Ridge Rides Again (180g)
JetShaka Rock (180g, CD +vinyl-only track)
KoushikKG Rhythm Traxx v. 5
MatisyahuLight (180g + MP3)
Willie NelsonAmerican Classic
The PostmarksMemoirs At The End Of The World
Their 13-track album combines the band’s proclivity for gritty, atmospheric pop songs with enchanting melodies that draw significant inspiration from film soundtracks. Memoirs is a leap forward for The Postmarks, expressed with ambient textures from dub reggae, horn arrangements from classic soul, and elements of experimentation reminiscent of sounds heard at the birth of electronic music
Smokey RobinsonTime Flies When You’re Having Fun
The Smiths LP re-issues (The Smiths, Meat Is Murder, Strangeways Here We Come, The Queen Is Dead)
Luke Vibert- We Hear You (3xLP)
WilcoSummerteeth (180g + CD) re-issue

CD RELEASES:

16 Horsepower – Secret South (CD + DVD-Audio)
Artic Monkeys – Humbug
Blitzen Trapper – Black River Killer EP
As its title would lead one to believe, the Black River Killer EP contains the disturbing and great song “Black River Killer” from Blitzen Trapper’s excellent September 2008 full-length album Furr. What is perhaps less evident from the title is that it also contains six more songs that have been, up to now, only available as a CD that Blitzen Trapper have only been selling at their live performances – until now!
James CarterHeaven On Earth: Live At The Blue Note
JetShaka Rock
Will HogeThe Wreckage
Imogean HeapEllipse
Imogen Heap, singer-songwriter-producer and two time Grammy nominee, is back with her much anticipated new solo album Ellipse! Beginning in Hawaii and working her way through Fiji, Imogen has poured her heart and soul into writing and recording this masterpiece. Recorded in the studio she built in her old family home in Essex, Ellipse further demonstrates Heap’s prowess as the most powerful female singer-songwriter of her generation
Matisyahu – Light
David MeadAlmost And Always
MewNo More Stories…
Ingrid Michaelson – Everybody
Willie NelsonAmerican Classic
The Postmarks - Memoirs At The End Of The World
Smokey RobinsonTime Flies When You’re Having Fun
Luke Vibert- We Hear You
Various ArtistsThe Rough Guide to Brazilian Lounge
Various Artists - Wayfaring Strangers: Lonesome Heroes (Numero 028)
Third in Numero’s Wayfairing Strangers series, Lonesome Heroes is a yet another deep stab into the world of private-issue folk. Built around male singer-songwriters discovering their inner Cohen and Hardin, the seventeen-track compilation surveys the back roads of the American folk movement in the 1970s.

Blind Willie McTell – Scarey Day Blues (2xLP)
Mew – No More Stories
Modest Mouse – No One’s First and You’re Next
Mount Eerie – Wind’s Poem Wind’s Poem is the third “official” album by Mount Eerie, the third in the continuum of semi-narrative explorations on the themes of erosion and mortality. It is the best record ever made by Mount Eerie or any related projects.Double clear vinyl, incredible heavy gatefold jackets with bronze foil stamping, 36 inch double sided lyrics poster, everything manufactured to the highest standards of quality.
Muse LP Reissues (Absolution, Black Holes and Revelations, Origin of Symmetry, Showbiz)
Charley Patton LP Reissues
Charley Patton – You’re Gonna Need Someone (4xLP Box)
Dudley Perkins – Expressions Instrumentals
Dudley Perkins + Madlib – A Lil Light Instrumentals (2xLP)
Sic Alps – Long Way Around After the recording of their debut album, Pleasures and Treasures in 2005, Sic Alps stripped it down to become the duo of Matthew Hartman and Mike Donovan. Their hazy, vintage psych/garage rock sound along with heavy touring of both the U.S. and Europe won them fans around the globe. They recorded a handful of singles and EPs during 2006 and 2007 which are now pretty much impossible to find, or fetching absurd prices on eBay. All of these singles (along with a rare compilation track, and one previously unreleased track) are included here in this convenient, remastered 26-track compilation.
Six Organs of Admittance – Luminous Night
The Cave Singers – Welcome Joy
Pissed Jeans – King of Jeans
Jack Penate – Everything is New
David Daniell and Douglas McCombs – Sycamore is the first album from the duo of David Daniell (San Agustin, Rhys Chatham) and Douglas McCombs (Tortoise, Eleventh Dream Day, Pullman). The album was recorded by Jeremy Lemos (Semaphore Recordings) and mixed with John McEntire at SOMA Studios. Sycamore is a delicate tapestry of spacious and ethereal guitar lines woven into abstract, slow-burning and multi-layered textural improvisations. The sounds blend and overlap to create richly faceted and thickly psychedelic passages, unveiling new layers of detail with each and every listen.

CD RELEASES:

Brendan Benson – My Old Familiar Friend
Eric Copeland – Alien in a Garbage Dump With Alien In A Garbage Dump, Brooklyn’s Eric Copeland emerges from his underground bunker, having sifted through the constant stimulation found everywhere in this 21st Century, discovering connections within our united co-existence while avoiding the prejudices we are relentlessly force-fed from the powers that be. The result is a coll-ection of songs at once uniquely urban but still strangely universal in language. Fifteen years strong in the game and somehow it’s easier to see where his music is going as opposed to where it’s been.
Final – Reading All the Right Signals Wrong Justin Broadrick has always made music which could one day serve as a soundtrack to the end of the world, should we ever need one. Whether with Godflesh or Jesu — themes of urban decay, corporate greed and post-modern malaise often set the bleak tone. Final, his longest running project, is no different. Formed in 1982, it has often run parallel to his more recognizable work and served as an undefinable and more experimental outlet. The CD version of “Reading All The Right Signals Wrong” includes four bonus tracks not on the LP and runs 79 minutes in length.
K’naan – Dusty Foot on the Road
Moby – Play & Play: The B-sides (2xCD)
Modest Mouse – No One’s First and You’re Next
Mount Eerie – Winds Poem
David Daniell and Douglas McCombs – Sycamore
Mute Math – Armistice
Joe Henry – Blood from Stars
The Cave Singers – Welcome Joy
Jack Penate - Everything is New
Jay Reatard – Watch Me Fall
Pissed Jeans - King of Jeans
Various Artists – The Duke of Elegant: The Gems from Duke Ellington Songbook
Various Artists - King of Blue: Revisited – The Miles Davis Songbook
